Compliance Training and Attestations

How to use training as one control within a wider program.

Why this matters

How to use training as one control within a wider program.

Training should be role-based

People need information tied to the decisions and risks in their work. A universal annual course may establish baseline awareness but rarely covers process-specific responsibilities.

Trigger training by change

New hires, role changes, new products, incidents, regulatory changes and policy revisions may require training outside the annual cycle.

Keep evidence

Retain audience, content version, completion date, assessment results, exemptions, reminders and escalation records. Completion data should be reconciled to the intended population.

Attestations

Attestations can confirm that a person received, understood or complied with a requirement, but they do not prove that every underlying activity occurred.

Measure usefulness

Look beyond completion percentages. Consider assessment results, error trends, questions, exceptions, hotline reports and whether control owners can explain their responsibilities.

Questions to document

  • Which obligations and processes are in scope?
  • Who owns the activity and who independently reviews it?
  • What record demonstrates that the activity operated?
  • What happens when the control fails or circumstances change?
